George Best Dies

It has just been announced that George Best, the greatest Man United player and arguably the greatest player of all time (for me Best and Maradona have no one else to rival them), has died. Best was a part of United's 'Holy Trinity' (with Law and Charlton) in the 1960s. He was also the first playboy of football but also had serious drink problems which effectively led to a long decline in health and his death. For US readers, he even played for the LA Aztecs (I think) in the 1970s scoring one of the greatest goals recorded I recall. In one sense (unless you're Northern Irish) it is a pity that he played international football for Northern Ireland because if he had played for a better international team he could have done some special things at the World Cup. Here are a few pictures. I always liked the cover of the Wedding Present album (a pretty impressive album it was too) as it is for me one the great images of football.

Yes there was heaps of interesting stuff to google. Ignorance of the antipodes - or mine anyway. I'll have to get hold of the music. I'd probably like it.

Reminds me - I think there was something on BBC about a new film on Johnny Cash?

So a band from LEEDS put a ManU player on the cover of an album? What gives?

Also, we need predictions on when SAF will be on his way...

I never thought about the Leeds-Wedding Present-George Best connection. If they are Leeds fans they have to rank among the moderates!!

As for Fergie, difficult one. Alot will depend on what happens in Europe and the Benfica game. Fergie claims he will stay on for a while and United look good again. But there's masses of rumours, esp. with the supposed role of Queiroz. And the Glazers boys are a bit of an unknown entity. A long way of saying, 'Don't know'.

steph, the Wedding Present aren't a particularly well known band here. There are plenty of Brits ignorant of them.

I'm glad I'm not alone in ignorance! As for a band from Leeds and ManUtd, two of the members were born or grew up near Manchester and anyway ManUtd have acquired fans all over the world. Never heard of Leeds though.

(bit of weetbix rhetoric going on upstairs)
