Attack of the Fundies!!!!

I've been receiving one of the periodic attacks by the hardcore conservative Christians (generally labelled fundamentalists - a term I'm not keen on but thought I should say it to distinguish from conservatives and evangelicals who are perfectly decent and engaging. Fair enough?). But these things happen. Anyway I had to close down the heated debate on the Wright post because that may well be part of it.

James -

Its more likely that you took it down because you were starting to look pretty bad, and I informed you that I am going to see what Wright thinks of your comments. Unfortunately for you, all of my posts here, which include the entirety of your comments, are created in Word documents, so shutting down the comments really doesn't help you. It might be seen in a somewhat favorable light - perhaps as evidence towards you being a bit ashamed of your statements. We will see.

Are we characterizing comments that disagree with your blogs as "attacks" now? I think it is more of an attack to call someone a "fundamentalist" when they are not, refer to them as an "idiot", tell them to "shut up", accuse them of being a "Left-Behindist", etc.

How is it honest to call someone a "fundamentalist" when you have no clue as to their theological background?

I am nowhere near a fundamentalist. I'll ask you for the last time to please stop misrepresenting my belief system. My belief system is irrelevant to the topic we were discussing.

Sincerely,
Bilbo

Who are you Dildo? Ashamed of your "posts here"? James is fine, no need to be concerned there. We're all just amused by you.

steph,

You can read up on the benefits and legality of anonymity here:

http://www.cippic.ca/en/faqs-resources/online-anonymity/

You already posted as anonymous to ridicule me in the thread that James closed down, so I'm sure you have some familiarity.

And I will also say, James - beyond making up a story about having been "attacked" by a "Fundamentalist" as a reason to close down a thread where someone disagreed with you, to then allow your friend "steph" to ridicule me by calling me "Dildo" is a bit one-sided, wouldn't you say?

Your moderation of the blog doesn't seem very fair or balanced. Calling the scholarly and pastoral integrity of conservative scholars into question without support is ok. Inaccurately pinning the label "fundamentalist" or "hardcore conservative" on those that defend them is fine. Calling visitors "idiots" and telling them to "shut up" is not a problem, nor is referring to them as "Dildo".

But if you disagree with James often enough, you're a raving "fundy" attacker and the thread will be closed.

Who needs to look it up? We all know the benefits of anonymity which are above all to mask one's identity and avoid shame (for needing websites to justify your fear of identification) and prosecution etc etc.

Bilbo: I get loads of attacks by various ultra conservative Xns and recently this has been happening. Maybe you're rant was part of that, I don't know. And for God's sake read the post again, it was not the comments section and blog disagreements that I was firing at but other attacks that I get. Consequently, I was wondering if you were part of that. I quote myself:
'I've been receiving one of the periodic attacks by the hardcore conservative Christian...Anyway I had to close down the heated debate on the Wright post BECAUSE THAT MAY WELL BE PART OF IT.' (capitals added)

I'm still not convinced that the various comments I receive have nothing to do with you, but maybe they don't

But please don't fool yourself that your magnificent debating skills had anything to do with it. You were not only consistently misrepresenting me but you were coming up with lie after lie after lie e.g. the claim that I was slurring NT Wright's position when I manifestly did not: I was explaining the possible reasons for Jim's comments and YOUR question. You talk about misrepresenting...

And I will also say, James - beyond making up a story about having been "attacked" by a "Fundamentalist" as a reason to close down a thread where someone disagreed with you
FOR GOD'S SAKE IT WASN'T TALKING ABOUT YOUR POST AS SUCH: I WAS TALKING ABOUT RECENT MAIL I HAD BEEN RECEIVING AND WAS WONDERING WHETHER YOU WERE PARETOF THAT. PLEASE READ THE POST. This is precisely what I was on about.

On an issue I truly care about - foreign policy - I had massive debates with Ken Ristau. Not once were they shut down. He made comments that I disagree with far more than yours but the debate went on and on and on.

And the comments haven't been deleted just blocked so I have them too, including your slurs.

Frankly I don't take back the idea that you are an idiot because you rant on and on. I don't want to engage with you anymore because you have nothing of significance to say. And the fact that I can speak aggressively will come as no surprise to people who know me.

And I couldn't care less what I called you: it means absolutely nothing to me.

'to then allow your friend "steph" to ridicule me by calling me "Dildo" is a bit one-sided, wouldn't you say?'
That has absolutely nothing to do with me.

Well...I guess the wo/man with an argument has no need for rhetoric (or labelling etc) & it's hard to think of any context in which mere rhetoric can be anything other than an own goal. What we need is arguments, and good ones.

steph,

I have no fear of prosecution as I haven't done anything even borderline unethical/illegal. Put down the pom-poms and stop tailgating James around. He's a big boy and he doesn't need a cheerleader everywhere he goes.

James,

I had absolutely nothing to do with any attack you are or were under. You've accused me of being a "fundy" without cause in the last thread right before you shut it down, so I'm sure you can understand how I interpreted this post. It was not very clear.

James: I don't want to engage with you anymore because you have nothing of significance to say.

Bilbo: Riiighhht...Nothing at all -I made no significant points in that thread.

James, you're obviously under no requirement to engage with me, but this blog needs a good dose of Bilbo. This will be my new shire.

As far as the name-calling, the fact that you're proud of this elucidates the disconnect in the thread you shut down -- we simply have different ideas of what it means to act like a scholar.

Bilbo, settin' up camp

James,
Your immense patience is amazing. Were the anonymous commentator levelling veiled threats at me not only would I ban him from commenting, but I would report his comments as spam to his isp. He clearly has something amiss else instead of hiding behind anonymity he would be himself. Only the cowardly hide, as we all learned in kindergarten.

Anyway, James, kudos to you for your patience with the fringe lunatics.

As an unashamed fundie, I just don't see what you've said that's so controversial, James...

Never mind, I'll live in blissful ignorance.

James to Biblo "this debate is no more, ok?"

Funnily enough, I was just on the way to post James' web address on all the Fundie blogs and webpages I could find during my coffee break, adding the note: 'convert me if you can no-brainers'.

MMMWHAHAHAHAhahaha

I see that you didn't ban Bilbo here, though that may be because he was aligning his "cowardly kindergarten" behavior in agreement with you. :)
